Privacy
Shuttle is a screen recorder that works entirely on your Mac.
What we collect
Nothing. Shuttle has no accounts, no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising and no tracking. Shuttle makes no network requests of its own, and we, the developer, never receive your recordings, your settings or any information about how you use the app.
The only things that leave the app are what you choose to share yourself: the Share menu, and the Upload to YouTube button on the review screen, which opens youtube.com in your browser and shows the file in Finder so you can drag it in. Shuttle never uploads anything itself.
Where your data stays
- Recordings (.mp4, and .srt subtitle files if you turn on Auto Subtitles) are saved only to the folder you choose. The default is
~/Movies/Shuttle. - Recording history and thumbnails are stored in Shuttle's own sandbox container on your Mac.
- Settings are stored in macOS user defaults on your Mac.
- When Auto Subtitles is on, the microphone track is also written to a temporary file on your Mac during recording so subtitles can be generated from it. The file is deleted once subtitles are done.
Deleting a recording in Shuttle moves it to the Trash. History, thumbnails and settings live in Shuttle's container (~/Library/Containers/ch.pixeesoft.shuttle); you can delete that folder to remove them. Recordings in your save folder stay until you delete them.
Permissions and why Shuttle asks
Shuttle explains each permission before macOS asks.
| Permission | Why | If you say no |
|---|---|---|
| Screen Recording | To capture the display, window or area you pick | Shuttle cannot record |
| Camera | To show the webcam bubble in your recording | Recording works without the bubble |
| Microphone | To record your voice | Recording works without your voice |
| Speech Recognition | Only if you turn on Auto Subtitles, to create the .srt file | No subtitles are generated |
| Notifications | To tell you when a recording is saved (asked the first time one is saved) | No notification; saving is unaffected |
You can change any of them later in System Settings > Privacy & Security.
Shuttle also offers launch at login and global keyboard shortcuts. Neither needs a privacy permission, and neither sends anything anywhere.
Auto Subtitles and Apple's speech recognition
Auto Subtitles is off by default. When you turn it on, Shuttle uses Apple's Speech framework to transcribe the recording's audio after it ends (normally the separate microphone track; the mixed audio in the .mp4 if that track is unavailable). Recognition runs on your Mac: Shuttle requires on-device recognition, and languages that have no on-device model are reported as unavailable instead of being uploaded.
There is one opt-in exception. Settings > Recording has a switch, off by default, that allows Apple's speech servers for better accuracy. Only if you turn it on, the audio being transcribed may be sent to Apple for processing under Apple's privacy policy. Shuttle itself never sends audio anywhere and never receives the result through any service of ours.
This website
This website is hosted by Cloudflare. It counts visits with Cloudflare's cookieless Web Analytics, which sets no cookie and does not identify you. Like any host, Cloudflare keeps ordinary request logs (the address requested, the time, the status) to run the service.
Beyond that, no analytics, no cookies and no tracking. The app itself sends nothing at all.
Children
Shuttle collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published with the app update that introduces the change.
